Hello! Welcome to TRIS.

This website was created to provide information to international students about renting and their rights as renters/tenants in Halifax and Nova Scotia.

Tenancy Rights of International Students (TRIS) is a grassroots group of/for international students who work collectively to promote awareness and self-advocacy for safe, accessible, affordable housing and tenancy rights for international students.

Tenancy rights concerns first arose in the Racialized Students Academic Network (RSAN) in 2016, where TRIS was created as a sub-committee. Dr. Bunjun’s course on community organizing from 2019-2022 was an important site for TRIS where many students have contributed to this important work, which we are very grateful for.

TRIS is a Working Group of NSPIRG (Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group), which supports campaigns and actions that address social or environmental inequalities, promotes critical awareness, and fosters social change.

Our public education campaign includes workshops, website, Instagram, posters, and other relevant resources for students and the general public. TRIS is located on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq (Kjipuktuk – colonial Halifax, Nova Scotia).
